New AI-Powered swab test aims to spot viruses in minutes
NCT ID NCT05661032
First seen Jun 30, 2026 · Last updated Jul 01, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests a new technology called Pictura Bio that aims to detect respiratory viruses quickly and cheaply from nose or throat swabs. Researchers will collect samples from 1000 adults and children with suspected viral infections at a UK hospital. The data will be used to train the system's algorithms to improve accuracy, with the goal of developing a faster, simpler diagnostic tool for viruses like flu and COVID-19.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a quick, cheap, and accurate test for respiratory viruses, improving diagnosis and treatment decisions.
What could go wrong
This is an early proof-of-concept study. The system is still learning and may not yet be accurate enough for clinical use. It will not affect patient care during the trial.
