Implantable pump could drain fluid for heart failure patients

NCT ID NCT06689553

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This early study tested a device that is surgically placed in the belly to continuously remove extra fluid from the body. It was designed for people with advanced heart failure whose bodies no longer respond to water pills. Only 2 patients were enrolled before the study was stopped, so the results are very limited.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

implanted fluid removal device with external pump

What this could lead to

If successful, this device could offer a new way to manage fluid buildup in heart failure patients who no longer respond to standard diuretic medications.

What could go wrong

This is a very early pilot study with only 2 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The device requires surgery to implant, and risks include infection, device malfunction, or complications from the procedure.
