Stanford tests AR/VR goggles to sharpen needle placement
NCT ID NCT06550193
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study at Stanford University tests whether augmented reality (AR) or virtual reality (VR) goggles can help doctors perform ultrasound-guided procedures, such as nerve blocks or placing IV lines, more precisely. About 100 adults having these procedures will use the AR/VR device to see ultrasound images overlaid on their view. Researchers will measure success rates, pain scores, and opioid use to see if the technology improves accuracy and patient outcomes.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Augmented reality (AR) or virtual reality (VR) device
What this could lead to
If successful, this could make common medical procedures like nerve blocks and line placements more accurate and easier for doctors to perform.
What could go wrong
This is an early feasibility study with only 100 participants. The technology may not improve outcomes enough to justify its use in routine care.
