Pill vs. shot: which blood thinner do bladder cancer patients prefer after surgery?

NCT ID NCT06243510

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This trial compared two blood thinners—apixaban (a pill) and enoxaparin (a shot)—in 126 bladder cancer patients after bladder removal surgery. The goal was to see which one patients were more likely to take as prescribed, which they preferred, and what it cost them. Participants took their assigned drug at home for 30 days and answered surveys by phone.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

apixaban and enoxaparin

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that apixaban is easier for patients to take at home than enoxaparin after bladder cancer surgery, potentially improving clot prevention.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed study focused on patient adherence and cost, not on directly proving which drug prevents more clots. Results may not apply to all bladder cancer patients.
