Blood thinner apixaban tested for late clots after spleen surgery

NCT ID NCT07461532

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether the blood thinner apixaban can dissolve blood clots in the portal vein that develop more than a year after laparoscopic spleen surgery in people with cirrhosis. Twenty participants will take apixaban twice daily, and doctors will use ultrasound or CT scans to see if the clots shrink or disappear. If successful, patients will continue apixaban long-term to prevent recurrence.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

apixaban

What this could lead to

If effective, apixaban could offer a safe way to dissolve late-occurring portal vein clots after spleen surgery, potentially preventing serious complications.

What could go wrong

This is a very small early study with only 20 participants, so results may not apply broadly. Patients must take apixaban indefinitely if it works, and bleeding risks are possible.
