Tailored surgery may save lives in aortic dissection
NCT ID NCT05912608
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks at two surgical approaches for repairing a tear in the aorta (the main artery from the heart) in 900 patients. One approach is less invasive (root-sparing), used for higher-risk patients, while the other is more extensive (root replacement and total arch repair), used for lower-risk patients. The goal is to see which strategy leads to fewer deaths and complications like stroke or heart attack.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
surgical procedure (root-sparing or root replacement with arch repair)
What this could lead to
If successful, this study could help surgeons choose the safest and most effective surgery for each patient with aortic dissection, potentially reducing deaths and complications.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, not a randomized trial, so results may be influenced by patient selection. The surgeries themselves carry serious risks like stroke, heart attack, and spinal cord injury.
