Antibiotics after bladder botox: infection prevention or not?
NCT ID NCT04444440
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether taking the antibiotic ciprofloxacin for three days after bladder Botox injections reduces the risk of urinary tract infections in women with overactive bladder. About 202 women will be randomly assigned to receive either the antibiotic or a placebo pill. The main goal is to see if fewer infections occur in the antibiotic group over six weeks.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Ciprofloxacin (antibiotic)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could show that a short course of antibiotics after bladder Botox reduces the chance of urinary tract infections in women.
What could go wrong
This is a Phase 4 trial, but it only looks at infection rates, not long-term safety. Antibiotics can cause side effects like nausea, and may not work for everyone.
