Blood tests could fine-tune IBD treatment, saving money and improving lives

NCT ID NCT02508012

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looked at whether regularly measuring levels of anti-TNF drugs and antibodies in the blood can help doctors better manage inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's and ulcerative colitis). 260 patients were split into two groups: one where doctors used these test results to adjust treatment, and one where they did not. The goal was to see if this monitoring approach improves quality of life and is cost-effective over two years.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

anti-TNF drugs (e.g., infliximab, adalimumab)

What this could lead to

If successful, this approach could help doctors adjust treatment more precisely, improving disease control and reducing costs for IBD patients.

What could go wrong

This is a completed study, not a new treatment. The monitoring strategy may not significantly improve outcomes or be cost-effective in all settings.
