Can a simple blood draw reduce transfusions in bone cancer surgery?

NCT ID NCT06459141

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests a technique called acute normovolemic hemodilution (ANH) in 150 adults undergoing bone tumor surgery. Before surgery, some blood is removed and replaced with fluid, so that if bleeding occurs, the patient loses less red blood cells. The goal is to see if this reduces the need for donor blood transfusions during surgery, which could lead to fewer complications and faster recovery.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

acute normovolemic hemodilution (a procedure where some blood is removed and replaced with fluid before surgery to reduce the need for donor blood)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could provide a safer way to manage blood loss during bone tumor surgery, reducing the need for donor blood transfusions and their associated risks.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial (150 participants) and previous studies have shown mixed results. The procedure may not significantly reduce transfusions or could carry its own risks.
