Can new staging tools better track ALS progression?
NCT ID NCT04858555
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study looks at two new ways to stage amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) based on key disease milestones. Researchers will check how well these systems work in 50 patients and see if adding a blood marker called neurofilament can improve tracking of the disease. The goal is to better understand ALS progression, not to test a new treatment.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a more accurate way to stage ALS, helping doctors better understand and track the disease.
What could go wrong
This is a small, observational study with only 50 patients from one center, so results may not apply to everyone. It is not testing a treatment.
