Could a simple change in breathing tube cuffs reduce Post-Surgery throat pain?

NCT ID NCT07315490

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether using lignocaine (a numbing medicine) instead of air to inflate the cuff of a breathing tube can lower the chance of sore throat, cough, and hoarseness after surgery. About 80 adults having general anesthesia will be randomly assigned to receive either air or lignocaine in the cuff. Researchers will measure cuff pressure and throat symptoms for 24 hours after surgery to see which approach works better.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Xylocaine (lignocaine)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a simple, low-cost way to reduce throat pain and other side effects after surgery, especially in settings where pressure monitors are not available.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 80 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The benefit over air may be small or not clinically meaningful.
