A steroid inside the breathing tube could soothe Post-Surgery throat pain
NCT ID NCT07760272
First seen Aug 12, 2026 · Last updated Aug 13, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial tests whether placing a steroid called dexamethasone inside the breathing tube's cuff can prevent or lessen sore throat, cough, and hoarseness after laparoscopic gallbladder removal. About 40 adults having this surgery will be randomly assigned to receive either the steroid or a saltwater solution in the tube cuff. Researchers will then track throat symptoms for 24 hours after surgery to see if the steroid offers better comfort.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Dexamethasone (a corticosteroid) placed inside the breathing tube cuff during surgery
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this simple, low-cost approach could ease throat discomfort and improve recovery for many people after surgery with a breathing tube.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial, so results may not apply broadly. The drug could still cause side effects, and the benefit over standard care is not yet proven.
