Simple pressure check may spare kids from post-surgery sore throat

NCT ID NCT07678086

First seen Jul 01, 2026 · Last updated Jul 01, 2026

Summary

This study compares two ways of adjusting the air cushion (cuff) on the breathing tube used during general anesthesia in children having laparoscopic appendectomy. One group uses the standard finger-palpation method, while the other uses a pressure sensor to keep the cuff within a safe range (15-18 mmHg). Researchers will check for sore throat, hoarseness, and cough at 2, 6, and 24 hours after surgery to see if active monitoring reduces these common side effects.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Pressure transducer (device) for continuous cuff pressure monitoring

What this could lead to

If it works, this simple technique could become a standard way to prevent sore throat and hoarseness in children after surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 60 children, so results may not apply to all surgeries or ages. The benefit may be small or absent.
