Smart radiation: MRI helps target head and neck cancer, spare healthy tissue
NCT ID NCT06137274
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This phase 2 trial is testing whether using MRI scans to adjust radiation therapy can better protect healthy organs in people with head and neck cancer. The study will enroll 35 patients who will receive standard intensity-modulated radiotherapy, but with a personalized boost guided by MRI. The main goal is to see if this approach reduces radiation dose to nearby structures like salivary glands and the throat by at least 7.5% compared to standard planning.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) with MRI guidance
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this approach could reduce radiation damage to healthy tissues, potentially lowering side effects like dry mouth and swallowing problems.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-phase trial (35 people) testing feasibility, not yet proven to improve outcomes. The technique may not work for all patients or may not reduce side effects as hoped.
