Exercise may fight hidden inflammation in spinal cord injury
NCT ID NCT05376449
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether a 12-week adaptive exercise program can reduce chronic inflammation in people with spinal cord injury (SCI). Chronic inflammation is linked to heart and lung disease, the top causes of death in SCI. Twenty-four adults with SCI will be randomly assigned to start exercise right away or after a 12-week delay, and researchers will measure changes in inflammatory markers like C-reactive protein.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Adaptive exercise program (HealthPartners NeuroWell Exercise Program)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could point toward a simple, non-drug way to reduce inflammation and improve long-term health for people with spinal cord injury.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early study with only 24 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Exercise may not reduce inflammation enough to make a real difference in disease risk.
