New combo aims to halt early blood cancer before it worsens

NCT ID NCT03516617

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a combination of two drugs, acalabrutinib and obinutuzumab, can eliminate signs of cancer in patients with early-stage chronic lymphocytic leukemia or small lymphocytic lymphoma who are at high risk of progression. About 120 participants will be randomly assigned to receive either acalabrutinib alone or both drugs together. The goal is to see if the combination leads to deeper remission and delays the need for further treatment.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

acalabrutinib and obinutuzumab

What this could lead to

If successful, this could offer a way to achieve deep remission in early-stage CLL/SLL, potentially delaying the need for more intensive treatment.

What could go wrong

This is a phase 2 trial with only 120 participants, so results are preliminary. The drugs may cause side effects like infections or bleeding, and not all patients may respond.
