Which stitch leaves a better scar after carpal tunnel surgery?
NCT ID NCT05503719
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares two common types of stitches used to close the wound after carpal tunnel release surgery: absorbable stitches that dissolve on their own and non-absorbable stitches that need to be removed. About 116 patients will be randomly assigned to one stitch type, and the appearance of their scar will be evaluated one year later. The goal is to see which stitch leads to a more pleasing scar from the patient's perspective.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- absorbable suture and non-absorbable suture
- What this could lead to
- If one suture type leads to better-looking scars, it could improve patient satisfaction after carpal tunnel surgery.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, single-center trial with only 116 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The study only looks at scar appearance, not other outcomes like infection or healing speed.
