Pocket ultrasound in GP offices could boost lifesaving aneurysm screening
NCT ID NCT05617326
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests a new way to screen for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), a dangerous bulge in the main belly artery that can be fatal if it bursts. Currently, patients must visit a radiologist for an ultrasound, but many don't go. Researchers are training general practitioners (GPs) to use a small, cheap ultrasound device during regular office or home visits. The trial will compare how many people get screened when their GP does it versus the standard referral to a radiologist, aiming to see if this simpler approach increases screening rates.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
ultraportable ultrasound screening
What this could lead to
If successful, this could make AAA screening more accessible and convenient, potentially catching dangerous aneurysms earlier and saving lives.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small, early-stage study (400 participants) focused on screening rates, not long-term health outcomes. GPs may miss aneurysms compared to radiologists, and results may not apply to all populations.
