Thyroid gland follicular carcinoma
MONDO:0005034A differentiated adenocarcinoma arising from the follicular cells of the thyroid gland. The nuclear features which characterize the thyroid gland papillary carcinoma are absent. Radiation exposure is a risk factor and it comprises approximately 10% to 15% of thyroid cancers. Clinically, it usually presents as a solitary mass in the thyroid gland. It is generally unifocal and thickly encapsulated and shows invasion of the capsule or the vessels. Diagnostic procedures include thyroid ultrasound and fine needle biopsy.
Also known as: follicular cancer of the thyroid, follicular cancer of the thyroid gland, follicular cancer of thyroid, follicular cancer of thyroid gland, thyroid gland follicular cancer, well-differentiated follicular carcinoma, carcinoma of thyroid follicle, carcinoma, follicular cell, malignant

New combo therapy shows promise for Radioiodine-Resistant thyroid cancer
Disease control OngoingThis phase 2 trial tests a combination of the immunotherapy drug PDR001 with either trametinib or dabrafenib in 19 patients with thyroid cancer that no longer responds to radioiodine treatment. The goal is to see if the combination can shrink tumors. The study is active but no lo…

Can a cancer drug make radioactive iodine work again for thyroid tumors?
Disease control OngoingThis phase 2 trial tests whether the targeted drug trametinib can help radioactive iodine (I-131) work better in people with advanced thyroid cancer that has returned or spread. The study includes 34 participants whose cancer no longer responds to standard radioactive iodine trea…

Can an immune booster make radioiodine more effective against thyroid cancer?
Disease control OngoingThis trial is testing whether adding the immunotherapy drug durvalumab to standard radioiodine treatment can help people with recurrent or metastatic thyroid cancer. The study includes patients whose tumors still absorb iodine, as seen on scans. The goal is to see if the combinat…

Radioactive iodine: unnecessary for some thyroid cancer patients?
Disease control OngoingThis study looks at whether low-risk thyroid cancer patients need radioactive iodine treatment after having their thyroid removed. About 504 participants are randomly assigned to receive either a standard dose of radio-iodine or no radio-iodine at all. The goal is to see if skipp…

New scan could speed up thyroid cancer imaging
Diagnosis OngoingThis study tests a new imaging tracer called 18F-TFB to see if it can show how well thyroid cancer cells take up radioactive iodine. The goal is to get results faster than current methods and without affecting later treatment. About 5 adults with thyroid cancer will receive the t…
