Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy
MONDO:0016318Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a neurological disorder that damages the myelin that covers and protects nerves in the white matter of the brain. It is caused by the JC virus (JCV). By age 10, most people have been infected with this virus, but itrarelycauses symptoms unless the immune system becomes severely weakened. The disease occurs, rarely, in organ transplant patients; people undergoing chronic corticosteroid or immunosuppressive therapy; and individuals with cancer, such as Hodgkins disease, lymphoma, and sarcoidosis. PML is most common among individuals with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).

Could donor cells beat a deadly brain virus?
Disease control CompletedThis early-phase study tested whether infusing virus-fighting immune cells from a healthy donor could safely treat progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), a serious brain infection in people with weak immune systems. Sixty adults with PML received up to three infusions …

New hope for HIV patients with rare brain disease?
Disease control CompletedThis study tested whether adding a powerful HIV drug called FUZEON® to standard antiretroviral therapy could help people with HIV who also have a rare brain infection called PML. PML is caused by a virus that attacks the brain when the immune system is weak. The goal was to see i…

Experimental drug aims to rebuild immunity against rare brain infection
Disease control CompletedThis early-phase study tested a drug called NT-I7 in 12 adults with progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), a serious brain infection that occurs in people with weakened immune systems. The goal was to see if NT-I7 could increase the number of infection-fighting white b…

MRI contrast dye may skew brain scans, study finds
Knowledge-focused CompletedThis study looked at how gadolinium, a dye used in MRI scans, changes the QSM signal in the brain's white matter. 73 patients with inflammatory central nervous system conditions had MRI scans before and after receiving gadolinium. The goal was to measure any differences in the si…

Scientists uncover how PML virus hides from immune system
Knowledge-focused CompletedThis study looked at 22 people with PML, a rare brain infection caused by the JC virus in those with weakened immune systems. Researchers collected blood, urine, and spinal fluid samples over six months to measure immune checkpoint molecules and antiviral responses. The goal was …
