Normal pressure hydrocephalus
MONDO:0009366A form of compensated hydrocephalus characterized clinically by a slowly progressive gait disorder (see gait disorders, neurologic), progressive intellectual decline, and urinary incontinence. Spinal fluid pressure tends to be in the high normal range. This condition may result from processes which interfere with the absorption of csf including subarachnoid hemorrhage, chronic meningitis, and other conditions. (From Adams et al., Principles of Neurology, 6th ed, pp631-3)
Also known as: NPH, chronic adult hydrocephalus, hydrocephalus, normal pressure, 1, hydrocephalus, normal-pressure

New brain drain device could help older adults walk better
Disease control OngoingThis study tests a new device called the eShunt System for treating normal pressure hydrocephalus, a condition that causes trouble walking, thinking, and bladder control in older adults. The device drains extra fluid from the brain through a small tube. Researchers will compare i…

Brain shunt surgery put to the test in Placebo-Controlled trial
Disease control OngoingThis study tests whether a brain shunt—a device that drains extra fluid—can improve walking and thinking in older adults with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH). One hundred participants will either receive an active shunt or a placebo procedure. The main goal is to …

New brain implant could ease walking and thinking problems in older adults
Disease control OngoingThis pilot study tests a new device called the eShunt, which is placed in a blood vessel to drain extra fluid from the brain in people with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). NPH causes trouble walking, thinking, and bladder control. The device aims to be a less invasive altern…

Brain valve registry checks safety in 160 patients
Disease control OngoingThis study follows 160 people who have or will get a CODMAN CERTAS Plus valve, a device implanted in the brain to drain extra fluid. The main goal is to see if the valve is placed correctly and works without problems 30 days after surgery. Participants include children and adults…

Can a Brain-Stiffness scan spot a treatable form of dementia?
Diagnosis OngoingThis trial tests whether magnetic resonance elastography (MRE), a special MRI that measures tissue stiffness, can distinguish normal pressure hydrocephalus from brain atrophy. Current scans often cannot tell the two apart, leading to missed or delayed diagnosis. Researchers will …

Unsteady gait in seniors may be a treatable brain disorder, new study suggests
Knowledge-focused ENROLLING_BY_INVITATIONThis study follows 450 older adults to understand why many develop a slow, unsteady walk. Researchers think it may be linked to a treatable brain condition called Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus. They will use brain scans and track health outcomes over six years to find better ways…
