New method may cut unnecessary scans for cancer patients with suspected clots
NCT ID NCT04657120
First seen Jan 04, 2026 · Last updated May 24, 2026 · Updated 22 times
Summary
This study tested whether a simple checklist called the YEARS algorithm can safely rule out dangerous blood clots in the lungs (pulmonary embolism) in cancer patients, reducing the need for CT scans. Researchers compared the YEARS approach to standard CT scanning alone in 698 adults with active cancer and suspected clots. The goal was to see if the algorithm could avoid unnecessary radiation and contrast dye exposure while still catching all dangerous clots.
