Could a longer course of vaginal progesterone cut preterm births in IVF?
NCT ID NCT05787509
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether giving vaginal progesterone gel for a longer time can prevent preterm birth in women who became pregnant through IVF with a fresh embryo transfer. About 100 women aged 20-40 with a single pregnancy will be enrolled. Researchers will compare preterm birth rates and live birth outcomes between those who receive extended progesterone treatment and those who do not.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- progesterone sustained-release vaginal gel
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could offer a simple way to reduce preterm births in IVF pregnancies, improving outcomes for mothers and babies.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-phase trial with only 100 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Progesterone is generally safe but may cause mild side effects like irritation or drowsiness.
