Ultrasound may replace X-Rays for epidural checks in abdominal surgery

NCT ID NCT06556836

First seen Apr 23, 2026 · Last updated May 01, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study tested whether ultrasound can accurately locate epidural catheters in 66 adults undergoing open abdominal surgery, comparing it to the standard X-ray method (epidurography). Participants had their catheter placement checked with both techniques. The goal was to see if ultrasound, which is less invasive and more practical, could reliably confirm correct placement for pain control after surgery.
