First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated Apr 30, 2026 · Updated 24 times

Summary

This study tested whether topiramate, a seizure medication, helps people who are dependent on both alcohol and nicotine quit both substances. 236 adults who drank heavily and smoked at least 5 cigarettes daily received either a high or low dose of topiramate or a placebo. The main goals were to see if topiramate led to more days without smoking and fewer heavy drinking days.
