This study tests whether a single dose of psilocybin (the active ingredient in magic mushrooms) combined with psychotherapy is safe and can reduce depression and substance use in veterans and first responders who haven't responded to standard treatments. Fifty participants will receive one of three doses (5mg, 10mg, or 25mg) and complete therapy sessions before and after. The trial also looks at brain changes and side effects over 14 weeks.

What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a new treatment option for people with hard-to-treat depression and substance use problems.
