Probiotic milk may keep triathletes Sniffle-Free
NCT ID NCT06970964
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether a daily probiotic drink (like Yakult) can reduce cold symptoms in triathletes before and after a competition. 80 healthy amateur triathletes drank either the probiotic or a placebo for 30 days before and 14 days after a race. Researchers tracked symptoms and immune markers to see if the probiotic helped.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- fermented milk containing Lacticaseibacillus paracasei strain Shirota (probiotic)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could offer a simple, non-drug way for athletes to reduce cold symptoms during intense training and competition.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage study in healthy athletes, so results may not apply to the general public. The effect may be small or no different from placebo.
