One Breath-Hold MRI could replace liver biopsies for NASH
NCT ID NCT05384652
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests a new MRI technique that measures liver fat, fibrosis, and inflammation in a single 14-second breath-hold, without needles or contrast dye. Researchers will scan 120 people with fatty liver disease (60 with simple steatosis and 60 with NASH) and compare results to liver biopsies. If accurate, this could offer a non-invasive way to diagnose NASH and track liver health.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- MRI scan (no drug or device)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could provide a fast, needle-free way to diagnose NASH and monitor liver health without a biopsy.
- What could go wrong
- This is an early diagnostic study, not a treatment trial. The new MRI method may not be accurate enough to replace biopsies, and results may not apply to all patients.
