First seen Feb 09, 2026 · Last updated Jun 20, 2026 · Updated 19 times
Summary
This study tests whether metformin, a diabetes drug, can improve mild memory and thinking problems in older adults who are overweight or obese. Fifty-four participants will receive either metformin plus lifestyle advice or lifestyle advice alone for 26 weeks. Researchers will use brain scans and memory tests to see if metformin helps by improving how the brain responds to insulin.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
metformin
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a simple, affordable way to slow memory decline in older adults with excess weight.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase study with only 54 participants, so results may not apply widely. Metformin may not improve cognition, and side effects like stomach upset are possible.
