New combo aims to fight lung cancer without chemo

NCT ID NCT04013542

First seen Oct 31, 2025 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 28 times

Summary

This early-phase trial tests whether combining two immunotherapy drugs (ipilimumab and nivolumab) with radiation therapy is safe and effective for patients with stage II or III non-small cell lung cancer that cannot be surgically removed. The goal is to see if this chemo-free approach can shrink tumors and improve outcomes. About 21 participants will receive the combination treatment and be monitored for side effects and tumor response.

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Ipilimumab and nivolumab (immunotherapy drugs) plus radiation therapy

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a new treatment option for locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer that avoids chemotherapy.

What could go wrong

This is a very early phase 1 trial with only 21 participants, so results may not apply broadly. Immunotherapy can cause serious immune-related side effects.
