Could carbon monoxide gas help heal lungs? small trial tests safety

NCT ID NCT04870125

First seen Jan 11, 2026 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 22 times

Summary

This early-phase study tests whether low doses of inhaled carbon monoxide are safe for people with severe lung injury caused by sepsis or pneumonia. Only 5 adults will receive the gas through a breathing mask, and researchers will closely monitor side effects. The goal is to see if a personalized dosing formula can safely raise carbon monoxide levels in the blood without causing harm.
