Dental cleaning may ward off deadly transplant complication

NCT ID NCT07535008

First seen Apr 21, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 12 times

Summary

This study tests whether a dental cleaning shortly after a stem cell transplant can prevent chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), a common and serious complication. Researchers will enroll 45 adults receiving a donor stem cell transplant for blood cancer. The goal is to see if removing bacteria from dental plaque can reduce the risk of chronic GVHD.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

dental cleaning

What this could lead to

If it works, this simple procedure could reduce the risk of chronic GVHD, a serious complication after stem cell transplant.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early feasibility study with only 45 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The link between dental plaque and GVHD is still uncertain.
