First seen Sep 30, 2025 · Last updated Jun 19, 2026 · Updated 27 times

Summary

This study tests whether tea tree oil mouthwash can reduce pain, swelling, and jaw stiffness after wisdom tooth removal as well as the standard chlorhexidine mouthwash. Fifty-four adults getting their lower wisdom teeth out will use one of the two mouthwashes three times daily for a week. They will record their pain levels and come back for check-ups on days 2 and 7 to measure healing.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Chlorhexidine gluconate 0.12% mouthwash and tea tree oil mouthwash

What this could lead to

If tea tree oil works as well as chlorhexidine, it could offer a natural alternative for managing pain and swelling after wisdom tooth removal.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 54 people. Results may not apply to everyone, and tea tree oil might not be as effective or could cause allergic reactions.
