Summary
This study tested whether doctors could safely give fewer blood transfusions during heart surgery by using a special monitor that checks how much oxygen the body's tissues are using. Researchers compared two groups of 676 adult heart surgery patients: one group received transfusions based on standard blood count levels, while the other group's transfusions were guided by real-time oxygen measurements. The goal was to see if the oxygen-guided method could reduce the number of patients needing a transfusion without increasing risks.
