Heart surgery study aims to cut unnecessary blood transfusions

NCT ID NCT05740059

Summary

This study tested whether doctors could safely give fewer blood transfusions during heart surgery by using a special monitor that checks if the body's tissues are getting enough oxygen. Researchers compared two groups of 676 adult patients: one group received transfusions based on standard blood count levels, while the other group's transfusions were guided by real-time oxygen measurements. The goal was to see if this oxygen-guided method could reduce the number of patients needing donated blood without increasing risks.
