Swab instead of scope: new test could spare vulnerable patients invasive procedures

NCT ID NCT06890078

First seen Apr 26, 2026 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 3 times

Summary

This study is testing whether a simple nose swab or mouth rinse can accurately diagnose pneumocystis pneumonia (PcP) in 240 immunocompromised adults. Currently, diagnosis often requires a bronchoscopy, which is invasive and uncomfortable. If the new PCR-based methods work well, they could make diagnosis faster, safer, and easier for patients.
