Surgery may beat drugs for fatty liver in obese patients
NCT ID NCT03472157
First seen Apr 17, 2026 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 7 times
Summary
This study tests if bariatric (weight-loss) surgery is more effective than standard medical treatment at making nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) disappear without worsening liver scarring. It involves 100 obese adults with advanced liver fibrosis. Participants are randomly assigned to either surgery or medication, and the main goal is to see if NASH clears up on a liver biopsy.
