New hope to reduce steroid dependence in common vascular disease

NCT ID NCT02902731

Summary

This study tested whether adding the drug anakinra to standard steroid treatment could better control giant cell arteritis, a blood vessel inflammation that affects older adults. Researchers compared steroids plus anakinra against steroids plus a placebo in 30 patients to see if the combination reduced disease flare-ups and allowed lower steroid doses. The goal was to find a treatment that controls the disease while minimizing the serious side effects of long-term steroid use.
