Respiratory distress syndrome in premature infants
MONDO:0009971Infant acute respiratory distress syndrome is a lung disorder that affects premature infants caused by developmental insufficiency of surfactant production and structural immaturity of the lungs. The symptoms usually appear shortly after birth and may include tachypnea, tachycardia, chest wall retractions (recession), expiratory grunting, nasal flaring and cyanosis during breathing efforts.
Also known as: RDS, respiratory distress syndrome, RDS of prematurity, Respiratory Distress Syndrome, Infant, respiratory distress syndrome in premature infants, IRDS, NRDS, RDS - infants

Can gentle oscillations help premature babies breathe better?
Disease control CancelledThis trial tests whether adding gentle oscillations to standard nasal continuous positive airway pressure (NCPAP) improves breathing support for newborns with respiratory distress syndrome. Premature infants who need NCPAP will be randomly assigned to receive either oscillatory N…

New method aims to help premature babies breathe easier without a breathing tube
Disease control By invitation onlyThis study tests whether giving surfactant (a natural substance that helps lungs stay open) through a small airway device placed above the vocal cords, along with standard breathing support (CPAP), is better than CPAP alone for late preterm and early term infants with respiratory…

One-Size-Fits-All oxygen may be outdated: new trial tests personalized targets
Disease control By invitation onlyThis study is testing whether giving each patient on a ventilator a personalized oxygen target (based on their unique health data) leads to better outcomes than standard care. Researchers will compare death rates and time spent on the ventilator between the two groups. The trial …

New combo therapy aims to save tiny lungs
Disease control OngoingThis Phase 3 trial tests whether adding budesonide (an anti-inflammatory) to standard surfactant treatment helps extremely preterm babies avoid chronic lung disease or death. About 642 infants born before 29 weeks or weighing under 1000 grams will receive either the combo or surf…

Can a smarter oxygen device help lung disease patients move more?
Symptom relief By invitation onlyThis study tests whether using a portable oxygen concentrator (a lightweight, battery-powered device) during walking or exercise helps people with interstitial lung disease (ILD) or COPD feel less breathless and be more active in their daily lives. Twenty-four participants will t…

Can remote rehab help lung patients breathe easier?
Symptom relief OngoingThis pilot study tests whether home-based or video-supervised exercise programs are acceptable and helpful for people with chronic lung diseases like IPF, sarcoidosis, bronchiectasis, asthma, and other interstitial lung diseases. Fifty participants will be randomly assigned to on…

Can a radioactive tracer reveal hidden lung scarring?
Knowledge-focused OngoingThis study tests whether a radioactive tracer called 68Ga-FAPi-46 can light up areas of scarring (fibrosis) in the lungs of people with interstitial lung disease. Participants receive the tracer and undergo a PET/CT scan to see where it collects. The goal is to understand how the…

Could gentle exercise with blood flow restriction help lung disease patients?
Knowledge-focused OngoingThis study tests whether low-intensity aerobic exercise with blood flow restriction (BFR) is safe and effective for people with interstitial lung disease (ILD). BFR uses a cuff to partially block blood flow, which may help build muscle with less strain. Thirty participants will t…

Scientists hunt for clues in the blood to predict lung fibrosis outcomes
Knowledge-focused By invitation onlyThis study looks for biological markers in blood and lung samples from people with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and other interstitial lung diseases. The goal is to find markers that can predict how the disease will progress and to group patients into subtypes. Researchers…

Simple bedside ultrasound may spot lung risk in preemies
Knowledge-focused By invitation onlyThis study looks at whether a simple bedside lung ultrasound can predict chronic lung disease in premature infants born before 32 weeks. Researchers will perform ultrasounds on 150 babies with breathing problems and track their outcomes. The goal is to see if early ultrasound sco…
