Could a simple mineral boost recovery after pediatric colon surgery?

NCT ID NCT07760493

First seen Aug 12, 2026 · Last updated Aug 13, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This trial tests whether giving zinc supplements before and after colonic surgery in children can help protect the gut lining and reduce inflammation. Children aged 1 month to 18 years undergoing colonic surgery with anastomosis will be randomly assigned to receive either routine care plus zinc or routine care alone. Researchers will measure blood markers of inflammation and zinc levels, as well as clinical outcomes like wound healing, time to full feeding, and hospital stay length.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Perioperative zinc supplementation (oral zinc given before and after surgery)
What this could lead to
If zinc helps, it could become a simple, low-cost way to improve recovery and reduce complications in children after colonic surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial, and zinc may not significantly improve outcomes. There is also a risk of side effects or that results may not apply to all children.
