Smart drain could spot deadly leaks after bowel surgery
NCT ID NCT07337590
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This trial tests a new device called xBar that adds sensors to a standard surgical drain. The goal is to continuously monitor the surgical connection (anastomosis) after colorectal cancer surgery and spot leaks early. The study will enroll 80 adults and compare their recovery to a similar group of past patients.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
xBar™ System (a sensing electrode array integrated into a surgical drain)
What this could lead to
If successful, this device could help doctors detect dangerous leaks after colorectal surgery earlier, potentially reducing complications and the need for a stoma.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial (80 people) comparing results to past patients, not a randomized controlled test. The device may not improve outcomes or could have unexpected issues.
