Skipping the Bone-Straightening step for wrist breaks in seniors?
NCT ID NCT07042139
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks at whether older adults (65+) with a displaced wrist fracture can be treated with just a cast, without first straightening the bone (closed reduction). The trial will compare pain and disability at 12 months between those who get a cast only and those who get the standard reduction plus cast. About 532 participants will be followed for up to 5 years.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Casting (dorsal cast)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that older adults with a broken wrist can avoid a painful reduction procedure and still recover well with just a cast.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small, early-stage study. The results may not apply to everyone, and skipping reduction could lead to worse pain or function in some patients.
