First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests a smoking cessation program in the construction industry, where safety managers are trained to help workers quit smoking. About 608 construction workers will receive nicotine gum and access to a telephone quit-line. The goal is to find the most effective and cost-efficient way to help workers stop smoking and stay smoke-free for at least 12 months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Nicotine replacement gum (Nicorette)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a cost-effective, scalable way to help construction workers quit smoking, improving their health and reducing tobacco-related disease.
What could go wrong
This is a Phase 4 study, so the intervention is already approved; however, success depends on worker participation and adherence, and results may not apply to other industries or settings.
