Brain scans and VR help scientists unlock the mystery of childhood stuttering
NCT ID NCT06578416
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study follows 120 children aged 3-6 who stutter or have typical speech, to learn why some recover naturally. Kids complete speech tests, wear brain-monitoring caps, and speak in virtual reality classrooms. Researchers track brain activity, heart rate, and skin responses to find clues about who will persist or recover.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this research could reveal early markers that predict whether a child will recover from stuttering or need long-term support.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It may not lead directly to new therapies, and results may take years to translate into clinical practice.
