Rectal cancer breakthrough: could chemo replace surgery for some patients?

NCT ID NCT07260526

First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study is testing whether people with early- or intermediate-stage low rectal cancer can safely avoid major surgery if their tumor responds well to chemotherapy and radiation. Instead of removing the rectum, doctors will closely monitor patients using a "watch-and-wait" approach. The goal is to preserve the rectum and improve quality of life, while still controlling the cancer. About 60 adults aged 18โ€“80 are being recruited.
