Walnuts vs. prostate cancer: a nutty new hope?

NCT ID NCT03824652

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether eating 2 ounces of walnuts daily for 4-10 weeks can slow prostate cancer growth in 50 men scheduled for prostate removal. Participants are randomly assigned to add walnuts to their usual diet or stick with their normal eating habits. Researchers will measure changes in cancer cell activity and inflammation in prostate tissue before and after the walnut intervention.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

walnuts

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a simple dietary change to help control prostate cancer progression before surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial with only 50 participants, so results may not apply widely. The effect on cancer growth is uncertain, and walnuts alone are unlikely to replace standard treatments.
