VR goggles could ease fear during eye surgery

NCT ID NCT07586280

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether letting cataract surgery patients watch a virtual reality (VR) simulation of the procedure beforehand can reduce their anxiety during the actual surgery. Sixty adults scheduled for cataract surgery will either watch the VR video or receive standard care. Researchers will measure anxiety levels, heart rate, and blood pressure during the operation to see if the VR experience helps patients stay calmer.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Virtual reality simulation of intraoperative audiovisual experience

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a simple, non-drug way to help cataract surgery patients feel calmer during the procedure.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 60 people, so results may not apply to everyone. The VR experience might not reduce anxiety for all patients.
