Can a VR headset prevent Post-Surgery confusion in seniors?

NCT ID NCT06232317

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tested whether a virtual reality game called ReCognitionVR could help older adults (60+) stay mentally alert after abdominal surgery. Thirty participants used the VR headset or standard orientation methods. The goal was to see if the VR approach is safe, acceptable, and feasible for preventing post-operative delirium.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Virtual reality software (ReCognitionVR) delivered via Oculus Quest 2

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a non-drug way to prevent confusion and delirium in older patients after surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a very small feasibility study with only 30 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The VR approach may not be practical or effective for all patients.
