VR headsets tested as new treatment for stomach paralysis

NCT ID NCT05079568

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This pilot study from Mayo Clinic tests whether using a virtual reality headset can safely ease symptoms of gastroparesis, a condition where the stomach empties too slowly. Thirty adults with gastroparesis will try VR programs with games, meditation, and relaxation exercises. The goal is to see if VR is tolerable and reduces nausea, bloating, and pain.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Virtual reality therapy using Oculus Go headset

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a non-drug way to ease nausea, bloating, and stomach pain for people with gastroparesis.

What could go wrong

This is a very small, early pilot study with only 30 people. It's currently suspended, so results may be delayed or never come. VR might not help symptoms at all.
