Radiation and mouth viruses: new study links cancer treatment to gum disease
NCT ID NCT02180932
First seen Mar 30, 2026 · Last updated May 02, 2026 · Updated 4 times
Summary
This study looked at whether radiation therapy for head and neck cancers changes the viruses in the mouth, especially the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and how that might affect gum disease. Researchers studied 25 patients receiving radiation and compared them to healthy controls. The goal was to better understand why many cancer patients develop severe gum problems after treatment, not to test a new treatment.
